This is a very racist statement, in trying to blame the expansion of the slave trade on Africans themselves instead of the perverse incentives the Spanish and Portuguese set up.

The arrival of white men on the continent and their capturing of Africans initially kicked off the slave trade. Their actions intensified as the crops of North America took off. They then exploited the tribal tensions to facilitate war and capture, and took the spoils via kidnapping.
