Black ancestorhood gives us the strength to live and love without wanting to be our oppressors.

On June 10th, a white person tried to lay claim to the Black concept of ancestorhood. The user has since protected her page, but not before Black Twitter put her on the SummerJam screen:

Despite what white people want you to think, it has been the state that has visited the most violence upon Black personhood.

Earlier this week, I published a story I’ve been researching and writing, in a sense, since I started blogging in 2016. In Little Rock, Black Power and White Supremacy Clash in Hunting a Serial Killer responded to the recent news of a murderer haunting my fair and Black city. But I had been developing the argument for years about how policy and political decisions create a society where killers become a natural byproduct.

I wanted to highlight a few lines, assertions, and evidence sources from the piece to give insights into my craft and also make the argument that following…

White supremacy forces the former vice president to break bread with his potential killers

Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool.
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.
To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery. — Octavia Butler.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has only wanted power but lacks…

A serial killer. A sales tax increase. Racially segregated political districts and police unions. In Little Rock, Black political power struggles with hunting a murderer.

Money, power and respect, what you need in life
Money, power and respect, you’ll be eatin’ right
Money, power and respect, you can sleep at night
You’ll see the light, what’s the key to life? —
Kimberly Denise Jones, Black poet.

The Little Rock Police Department (LRPD) found Debra Walker stumbling and bleeding early on April 11th.

The police and medical first responders found her suffering from 15 stab wounds. They quickly got her to the Univesity of Arkansas Medical School hospital, where doctors examined her and determined her wounds did not threaten her life. Still, the trauma of the…

This is the rare occasion where I feed a troll. I might as well do it in style.

A scene from Batman: War on Crime by Alex Ross.

Today, a commenter named R.E.A.L Human Rights posted a long response to my story, DC Comics Should Heed the Prophecy that is the Bubbling Black Backlash Against Batman. I’m convinced this person is a troll. Regardless, I responded as his comments allowed me to flesh out several of the arguments I made in the piece.

Black writers — I fell for the trap of responding to an unprincipled and weak argument. In the future, I need to make sure I only respond to people who have counters against both my premises and evidence. …

I’m not surprised that we seem to be entering an era where Black athletes demand change in their workplaces.

Tennis needs Naomi Osaka more than Osaka needs tennis.

Citing her mental health, Osaka said that she would be pulling out of press conferences for the French Open. Tennis officials said they would fine her $15,000 for not participating and threatened to withdraw her from the tournament. Osaka called their bluff and excused herself.

Much of Black personhood has rallied around her in support. According to CNN, sports stars such as the Williams sisters, Usain Bolt, and Kyrie Irving have echoed support. Even commentator Stephen Smith, whose brand centers around Blackness and respectability politics, expressed empathy for Osaka’s mental.

We…

In researching a serial killer, I examine how Black power responds to crime.

When I write, I center Black personhood. I want to write about the stories, decisions, emotions, fashion, institutions, myths, legends, and truths that allow my people to love, live, and persist in the West.

In this story I am currently writing about the Little Rock Slasher, I realized that the sensationalism surrounding the serial killer is a white response. I realized I had to do more research into the political structure of the city and its police to get to the Black story.

Because Black people are not sensationalizing the killer. …

Segregation follows Black folk everywhere — even behind the Blue Wall.

I dug into the crates to update and republish this story from the old blog. This story provides important context on the terror a serial killer is instilling within Little Rock and why my town’s police is hapless in catching him. Another earlier story, The Blue Paper Trail, provides more context.

On March 11th, 2018, attorney Mike Laux filed suit against the Little Rock Police Department (LRPD) on behalf of several Black police officers. In his federal complaint, he charged the department with systemic racial discrimination. …
